Best known as an accompanist adding dramatic colors and textures to the music
of contemporary singer-songwriters (most notably Ferron), and as a member of
the Seattle-based band "Rumors of the Big Wave," Jami Sieber transforms her
acoustic and electric cellos into vehicles of complex passions on this
eclectic CD. Dark and meditative moods predominate, but Sieber looks deeply
into their ramifications and opens a multitude of enthralling musical and
spiritual pathways.
Playing solo on two numbers, and weaving her mercurial tones through small chamber and pop ensemble settings (variously featuring percussion, piano, accordion, bass, drums, trumpet, reeds) on the rest, Sieber also steps out as a vocalist. Her wordless vocalizing beautifully shadows her cello here and there, her poetic recitations prove compelling on the subjects of lives well lived and deaths faced nobly, and her version of Richard Farina's "A Swallow Song" suggests more singing in the future.
For an album so ambitious in its breadth, "Second Sight" neither loses focus nor strays far from a tranquil center. Even listeners familiar with David Darling's pioneering jazz experiments on the same instrument may be surprised by the rich textures, the rainbow of emotions, and the heartfelt spaciousness Sieber creates with her cello.

This rich 1998 sonic journey weaves the warmth and beauty of Jami's unsurpassable electric and acoustic cello with drums, trumpet, sax, piano, accordion, vocals and nylon-string guitar. Featuring guest vocalist Rhiannon on "I Carry You;" Julie Wolf on piano on two tracks; and a beautiful poem by Charlie Murphy (one of Jami's longest-term collaborators) entitled "Tree of Love." A delicious variety in arrangements, too, ranging from the full richness of bass, drums, and vocals plus cello, to the poignant simplicity of solo cello. One of the most talented musicians we know has gifted us with another expression of her art; partake!
