POETRY CONCERTS

To unite poetry with music is to open a portal in human consciousness. Both speak to direct experience below the armaments of the mind. Both can call forth the deepest mysteries about living and dying. When the words and the music emerge from and carry us toward the source of the heart's truth, great healing and awakening can occur.

In 2002, Jami began collaborating with poet and performance artist Kim Rosen in the creation of "Poetry Concerts." Since that time, they have been exploring a new aesthetic in which the spoken poems of modern and classical poets are interwoven with original music. The focus is on an equal, dialogical relationship between the art forms rather than the more traditional approach in which the music is background to the poem.

The concerts vary, but always include the poetry of such masters as Kunitz, Rilke, Rumi, Goethe, Oliver and Dickinson spoken by Kim, along with original music by Jami and various guest artists including Michaelle Goerlitz (percussion), Jennifer Berezan (singer/songwriter), Rhiannon (vocalist), and Gary Malkin (composer, pianist).

BEYOND WORDS: Poetry and Music as Passion, Prayer and Practice

A NINE DAY Retreat on the Big Island of Hawaii
February 19-28, 2008

Every experience in the human spectrum is a doorway to awakening. Inside each moment, from the blackest to the brightest, there waits the song, the poem, the Great Silence we have sought.

For many years now, Kim Rosen has gathered circles of souls in alchemical vessels of time and space to discover the "gold" of True Nature. In these retreats she is joined by musical alchemist, Jami Sieber. The vortex created by Jami's cello and chant in oceanic resonance with the poems, songs and silence emerging from the circle is a constantly evolving miracle. A font of creative outpouring erupts. Poetry and song as well as deep personal inquiry and healing stream between the notes of wind, rock, dove cry and cello.

In these retreats we immerse ourselves in intimate meeting with the poems we love and the poems we write. They become the Teacher and the Beloved. We invite the magic that unfurls as poetry intertwines with music. In addition, there are sessions of breathwork, chanting and movement. We enter silence together and alone. The retreat culminates in a "mysterium"--an exploration beyond ordinary words that spans poetry and music, night and day, sound and silence, waking and sleeping, aloneness and communion...

Retreat Location
"Hale Kai," a Balinese temple built on sacred ground on the Big Island of Hawaii, is an extraordinary place. Creation and destruction are a constant red glow on the horizon from the Volcano. The spinner dolphins leap from the sea and the mountains are threaded with the burial caves of the ancestors. This year, owners David and Debby Blehert-Koehn have renovated the already breathtaking buildings into a congregation of sanctuaries. Our days are planned to allow plenty of free time for hiking, exploring and swimming with the dolphins and the miraculous tropical fish which abound at Hookena Beach--only a 5 minute walk away.

Registration and Information
9 Day Retreat Fee: $2375 before November 13, 2007, $2450 thereafter (includes lodging and food).
